What a standard pad is made of

Most pads on a supermarket shelf share the same skeleton. A polypropylene topsheet touches the skin. Under it sits an absorbent core of wood-pulp fluff plus superabsorbent polymer (SAP) — the same sodium polyacrylate crystals used in disposable diapers. A polyethylene or PVC backsheet stops leaks, and synthetic fragrance masks the plastic smell. None of that is a toxin by itself. The worry is the residue and the additives.

A 2023 systematic review in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (BJOG) found conventional menstrual products can contain phthalates, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), parabens, environmental phenols, fragrance chemicals, and dioxin-like compounds — many classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) PubMed. A 2019 study in Environmental Research found pads and diapers carried higher phthalate levels than most common plastic products, likely from the flexible PVC backsheet EPA dioxin facts.

Here is the part that matters anatomically: the vulvar and vaginal mucosa is thin, highly vascularised, and lacks the protective stratum corneum most skin has. Chlorine: ECF is not TCF

Bleaching is where dioxins come from. ECF (Elemental Chlorine-Free) uses chlorine dioxide and cuts dioxin by 90–95%. TCF (Totally Chlorine-Free) uses oxygen-based agents and removes chlorine entirely. A pad labelled "chlorine-free" without saying TCF is almost certainly ECF. The cleanest non-toxic sanitary pads are TCF-bleached.

Is SAP dangerous?

How do I spot greenwashing?
